T Rex Activities

trexmuseumThis is the really fun part. Some people ask what do my kids do here... They will do just about everything a real paleontologist in the field would do. We often start kids out in our "paleopit" where they get to practice digging in the sand for big fossils buried beneath our mini desert. If they are younger they may decide to "play" with the many dinosaur toys we have available. The good news for you is that it is totally surrounded and safe while you take a deserved break.

Next it is on to our fossil sand box where everyone gets to dig and sort through many fossils on the sorting screen, just like real paleontologists do. And they get to sort out and then keep the 5 best fossils they find. We have fossil shark teeth, stingray jaws, vertebrae, dino bones, amber, ancient sea creatures, and much more to find and pick.

Our most popular activity is Gold Panning. Yes, we have real flakes of gold in it. But due to the cost of gold we have started adding other things such as Herkimer diamonds, semi precious stones, fossils, meteorites, and other fun treasures. And they get to keep all they find, usually worth the price of admission by itself.

Ever wanted to find a "Magik Rock" Well at fossil Gem Mountain you get to do just that. Rubies, emeralds, diamonds, agates, sodalite, and many other possibilities here. Use your intuition to find the right one for you.

trexmuseumWhat kid (of any age) doesn't want to use a hammer to break rocks and not get yelled at... Here, everyone gets to break a Geode and take home whatever is inside. A Geode is a round rock that is usually found in deserts or volcanic areas around the world. Inside are anything from 40,000 year old water to crystals, marbled quartz, and many other beautiful and surprising precipitates. You get to keep it whatever it is.

trexmuseumAnd finally everyone gets to split open 36 to 55 million year old fossiliferrous shale. In the past kids have found, leaves, bugs, parts of ancient lizards, fish, and lots of other cool fossils. And you get to keep whatever you find.

And best of all this is all supervised by a professional paleontologist who found most of the stuff that you will be exploring. Total time for the activities is about 30 minutes.
